If there’s one dish I always order at restaurants when I see it on the menu, it’s some delicious shrimp and grits. They’ve become an irresistible favorite of mine. Fortunately, I can have them at home any time I’d like thanks to my mom’s recipe!
These shrimp and grits are packed with flavor and the creamy, cheesy grits will have you thinking about these for days! I have no doubt you’ll love these and make them a regular in your dinner rotation.

As for the shrimp, you’re going to cook them in tons of seasonings and bacon drippings. Between the grits and bacon grease, this recipe would make my sweet, late southern grandmother proud. How I miss her.
The final product will blow you away, I promise. It’s so easy to make but tastes like it took you hours in the kitchen and years of culinary training. Those are the best kinds of recipes, am I right?

Cheesy Bacon Shrimp and Grits
Ingredients
For the grits:
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup stone-ground grits
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1 1/2 cups extra sharp cheddar cheese
For the shrimp:
- 1 pound shrimp peeled and deveined
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- 1/2 tbsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 3 tbsp scallions chopped
- 4/6 strips bacon cooked and crumbled
- 1/2 tbsp bacon drippings
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 2 tbsp butter
Instructions
To make the grits:
- Mix together 2 cups of broth, milk, salt, cayenne pepper, paprika, and garlic powder in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium high heat.
- Slowly stir in the grits and cook covered on low to medium heat, stirring often for 12-15 minutes.
- When the grits are soft and thickened, remove from heat and stir in the cheese and butter. Taste and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- If you like a thinner consistency to your grits, add in a little water.
- Cover and set aside while preparing the shrimp.
To make the shrimp:
- In a small bowl, combine the seasonings and mix well.
- Toss the shrimp with oil. Sprink the seasonings over the shrimp and toss to coat.
- Heat a large skillet with the bacon drippings over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and cook until the shrimp is opaque–about 2 minutes per side.
- To serve, divide the grits onto the bottom of four large bowls. Divide the shrimp on top of the grits.
- Add the 1/2 cup chicken broth and 2 tbsp butter to the pan. Cook for about a minute over medium heat until it slightly thickens and reduces. Drizzle the sauce over the shrimp.
- Sprinkle on bacon crumbles and green scallions.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
