show notes

Welcome to The NC EAT & PLAY Podcast. Today, we will be talking to Jason, co-owner of FRESH. Local Ice cream and their General Manager, Jessica.

I started NC Eat & Play to highlight and celebrate local businesses, establishments and “worth-the-trip” destinations in North Carolina. Growing up here, I love the fact that we’re helping thousands of locals discover great local food finds and activities curated for sensible budgets and everyday play.

A Look Back at the Week

Last week was Harrison’s Birthday! To celebrate, we went to a new BBQ restaurant, Lawrence Barbecue and it was delicious. We had pulled pork and brisket sandwiches that were amazing! We also went to the park, where we blew up colorful balloons and Harrison tested the glasses I gave to him for his color blindness. So, we learned that Harrison is part of the 1 in 5 people that don’t respond to colorblind glasses. It was such a disappointment, but we still had a great time and Harrison was still grateful to try the glasses. We definitely had a good laugh about this!

Last time we talked, I mentioned the amazing Mac & Cheese recipe by Ashley Christensen from Poole’s Diner. Well, I attempted to make the recipe and it didn’t disappoint. It was amazing!

Did You Know? Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserves

Today’s DID YOU KNOW is about the Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserves in Cary. It’s a park that is home to the Eastern Hemlock Trees that typically only grows in the mountains… in the middle of Cary. How amazing is that? It’s beautiful and currently open for hiking. It’s great for a picnic, bird watching and hiking with the family.

The Main Course

Today, I would like to welcome Jason and Jessica from FRESH. Local Ice Cream to the show. Jason and his wife, Casey are the owners of FRESH. Local and Jessica is the General Manager. FRESH. Local Ice Cream is a mom and pop ice cream shop with locations in Raleigh, Cary and Apex. They are known for their unique flavors and hand-made ice cream cakes, all made from locally sourced ingredients. They also have an ice cream truck for delivery, can host ice cream socials, corporate events, weddings and can even host a build your own sundae party as well. Wow!

FRESH. Local is the BEST ice cream I’ve ever had. Yep, that’s right! Hands down, the best. It’s incredible and everything I look for in an ice cream. It’s loaded with mix-ins, it’s creamy and fresh. And, the owners are incredibly nice. Everyone definitely needs to try it.

So now, I’m excited to welcome Jason and Jessica! First up, let’s talk about the flavors. Jason’s favorite permanent flavor is Banana Pudding and his favorite seasonal flavor is the Frozen Hot Chocolate. Jessica loves the White Mint Chip (permanent) and Cookie Monster (seasonal). Megan’s favorites are the Banana Pudding, Midnight Brownie and definitely the Cookie Monster. They also offer non-dairy flavors, made with almond milk that are phenomenal.

The first location of FRESH. Local Ice Cream opened in Raleigh in 2011 by Jason’s father, who has a long history of making ice cream. He attended Carvel University in NY and owned a Carvel at 18 years of age. 25 years later, he started making his own recipes and they still use those recipes today.

Jessica has been with FRESH. Local for about 15 months and loves overseeing the Cary and Apex stores. It’s rewarding for her to work with local kids and making customers happy.

Originally, Jason started with an ice cream truck in 2014 until he found the perfect location for his Cary store. He now owns the locations in Cary and Apex with his wife, Casey.

FRESH. Local Ice Cream offers a pint club for its frequent customers. It’s a seasonal club which offers 2 pints of ice cream per month to its pint club members. The flavors they receive are made exclusively for those pint club members and are not available to everyone. They also include a gift too.

Fresh Local only uses ingredients that are sourced from local farms whenever possible.

(note: FRESH. Local Ice Cream has suspended delivery until November).
We’re all still dealing with Covid-19 and FRESH. Local decided to offer a zero contact delivery service and curbside pickup as well. They will deliver ice cream right to your door and text you when it arrives. A sweet treat right to your door!

FRESH. Local Ice Cream has also supported the community during this time and donates to front line workers and anyone in need of a spirit lifting gift. Keep on the lookout for all the amazing ways that FRESH. Local Ice Cream is keeping everyone smiling.
