If I’m passing through Western NC and the foothills, I always make a pit stop at JD’s Smokehouse, a casual BBQ joint with excellent food.
Something about deliciously seasoned meat, succulent sides, and mouthwatering desserts seems to hit different after a long hike or camping trip, especially at Wilson Creek. JD’s Smokehouse consistently delivers on all of those fronts.
Originally opened in Burke County, JD’s Smokehouse opened a second location in 2022 in Southwest Lenoir. This is smack dab in the heart of Caldwell County, providing residents with delicious BBQ. JD’s Smokehouse has been voted “NC’s Best BBQ” by Carolina Country Magazine and Strange Carolinas.
My go-to order is a combo plate which comes with two portions of meat (hardwood smoked low and slow) , two sides, and bread. I usually pick pork, brisket, jalapeno cheese grits, and sweet potato crunch. The jalapeno cheese grits are a perfect blend of creamy cheesiness and a hint of spice. The sweet potato crunch will change your life; candied sweet potatoes with a nutty crumb topping. I wash it all down with an ice-cold Cheerwine, the perfect compliment to a perfect meal.
One thing to note about this famous eatery: They are only open a few days a week, Thursday through Saturday, for lunch and dinner. If you’re lucky enough to be in the area on one of those days, plan a meal at JD’s for a true southern feast.
JD’s Smokehouse is family owned and operated, and their friendly staff will have you leaving with a smile and a full stomach.
