Select the right rug with help from the experts at Furnitureland South

NC Eat & Play at Furnitureland South

When NC Eat & Play announced its partnership with Furnitureland South in late 2023, many of our followers started sending us design topics and common designer questions. We thought it would be great to share one of their most frequently asked questions and a popular video on selecting the right rug for your space.

It’s not as simple as one might think. In most homes, rooms are sized differently, and each one requires something different from the others. How frequently you walk on the rug is also something to consider.

I’m grateful to connect you to furniture and home design experts from the largest furniture store in the country – right here in North Carolina. We’ve pulled a transcript of this Furnitureland South video and provided important visuals that will help.

The right rug will pull together your entire room. It connects your furniture and accessories. Most importantly, it makes your room feel more cozy and inviting. And that’s something that Furnitureland is very passionate about.

I’ve learned a lot from the experts and Furnitureland, and I’m excited to share this subtle but essential piece of interior design with you.

Tips for selecting the right rug

Living Room

The legs of all the furniture should touch the rug. The rug doesn’t need to encompass the entire piece of furniture; you can place it under the front legs. The rug is a connecting factor and will create the warm, cozy, and inviting vibe you want in this space and any space with upholstery.

Bedroom

For the bedroom, you’ll want to run the length of the rug with the width of your headboard and nightstands. It gives your room a balancing effect. Again, your rug does not need to encompass every piece of furniture. Try running the rug halfway under the bed, not all the way to the nightstands. You’ll find it unifies your bedroom.

The size of your bed will dictate the minimum rug size you’ll want to use. You definitely won’t want to go any smaller, though you can go larger:

  • Twin Bed: 5’x7′
  • Full Bed: 6’x9′
  • Queen Bed: 8’x10′
  • King Bed: 9’x12′

Dining Room

Essentially, you’ll want at least 24 inches all the way around your table. This will give space for you to pull your chairs out. For example, a 72″x76″ table will need a minimum of an 8’x10′ rug to accommodate the chairs.
