We recently went to our first Durham Bulls game together! It was a fun time and a must-do summer activity for all North Carolinians. Even if you’re not a baseball fan, a Durham Bulls game offers plenty besides baseball. Here are some things you should know before heading to the ballpark.
Preparing for the Game
The Durham Bulls Athletic Park is situated in the heart of Downtown Durham, and things really start to get crowded on game days. Luckily, the event staff do a great job directing traffic. Just be sure to leave with enough time to spare.
Parking can be purchased beforehand on their website, or you can pay by card on location (cash is not accepted). There are several parking options on their site. We opted for the South Parking deck. This put us pretty close to the Park’s entrance, where we were able to quickly show our tickets and walk right in.
Summer Weather
Durham Bulls games can be hot, especially those July and August games during the dog days of summer. Be sure to dress for the weather and be okay with sweating a little. Sunglasses and a hat can go a long way in keeping you comfortable.
We sat behind right field, a direct shot for the suns rays to our faces. We walked around, got our food, and waited under shaded pavilions until the sun dropped further and hid behind some clouds.
Food Options at Durham Bulls Athletic Park
Durham Bulls Athletic Park has some excellent options. Concessions include Brookwood Farms BBQ, Chick-fil-A, Derby Coffee, El Jefecito Tacos, Jimmy’s Gourmet Popcorn, Loco Pops, Rita’s Italian Ice, Pie Pushers Pizza, and Two Rooster’s Ice Cream.
We opted for the Two Rooster’s Ice Cream, and it was delicious. Durham Bulls Athletic Park also has a number of food and drink promotions, including Tacos and Tallboys Tuesday, Kids Eat Free Wednesday, and Dollar Dog Thursday.
The Best Way to End the Day? Fireworks!
One of our favorite parts of the night was the extensive fireworks show after the game. They shoot them from a large trailer in the middle of the field every Friday and Saturday. I think that was the closest we have ever been to big fireworks, and it made for a much more impressive spectacle of explosions.
However, be aware that they are very loud, and some kids may be uncomfortable depending on your seat location.
We loved watching the Durham Bulls play and plan to make it a new summer tradition! Hopefully, these tips will help you create your summer family tradition.
