They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right?
I’m a true breakfast food lover, whether it be morning, noon or night. After all, who says we have to get up early to enjoy some sizzling bacon, juicy sausage or crispy waffles dripping in butter and warm maple syrup. So when I say “Let’s do breakfast,” no time is off-limits. Here are some of my recent favorites that my family has enjoyed again and again.
LAFARM BAKERY

One of my favorite local spots for breakfast or brunch has to be LaFarm Bakery. I recently had a fantastic breakfast with TayTay’s Tryin To Eat.
LaFarm is ranked in USA Today’s top ten bakeries in the country so I knew it wouldn’t disappoint. Everything was delicious and I’m now officially obsessed with their famous white chocolate baguettes. If I could eat one every day for the rest of my life it still wouldn’t be enough. (I’m just a lil’ dramatic if you haven’t figured that out yet.)
BIG C WAFFLES

I finally tried Big C Waffles and boy do they know what they are doing.
The fried chicken is seasoned so well. I find a lot of fried chicken to taste bland but not theirs. It was crispy on the outside and so juicy on the inside. I don’t know how they do it but as long as they keep doing it, that’s good enough for me.
The waffles surprised me honestly. I typically prefer waffles that are crispy on the outside so I didn’t expect to love these softer ones but I DID. They have a lot of flavors to choose from and you can even mix and match on the same waffle. Here are the flavors we tried:
- Donut: my favorite! It was like a state fair funnel cake in waffle form
- Bacon, egg and cheese: perfect for savory!
- Sweet potato: almost tasted like a very subtle pumpkin flavor? I’m a 20 something white girl so I liked that of course
- Red velvet: exactly what it sounds like and very good.
I realized after we left that they also have blueberry and I wish I had tried it! I love blueberry! Next time.
We also ordered their famous kool-aid and I loved it. It was quite sugary. So if you’re a baby about sugar, I feel sorry for you. And you should skip ordering this.
Their restaurant is “pull up or park” style so you can park and get out to order at the window, or you can call ahead and pull up to pick it up. If you’re in a rush, I suggest calling ahead. They make their food fresh so it isn’t “fast food” even though the building looks like it would be.
Have you tried this famous Durham joint yet?! What did you think?
RISE SOUTHERN BISCUITS & RIGHTEOUS CHICKEN

When I lived out west, I went to a restaurant that sold biscuits for breakfast and ordered a chicken biscuit. They laughed at me and said “fried chicken…for breakfast? We don’t do that.” And that’s just one reason that the south is the holy land. Thank goodness I’m home.
BEASLEY’S CHICKEN + HONEY

I didn’t try chicken & waffles until I was 21 and I’ve spent the last 5 years trying to make up for that lost time. It’s such a perfect combination of sweet, savory and melt in your mouth goodness.
Share some goodness.
More than ever, there’s nothing sweeter than supporting local businesses. Please let them know you saw their dishes on NC Eat & Play.
